I might call it "the product of goofing around in shop class". But who knows? There might be another explanation for it.
lol.. your replies are hilarious! seriously though.. it has more metal then the coin should have *hope that makes sense* and it weighs more as well. ?
It had to be after minting, so even though there may be extra metal, it would still be called damage and not an error.
I may be wrong though, it could be an obverse die-break. I'd suggest adding a clear photo or two of the reverse, if it IS a die break, there may be evidence visible on it. It should appear like a slightly weaker strike opposite the added metal on the obverse. then a true expert may come along and verify it as one or the other.
cpm9ball: "You guys are blind. It's as plain as day. He's blowing his nose." Yes, more likely than not it's post production damage. However, the learning process is fluent, meaning that by thoroughly examining a particular specimen you become more educated about it. Not everyone has mastered the ability to determine whether this type of example is a true error or not from a casual glance at it. In fact, even experts are capable of mistakes, especially if they don't give an example a proper look and rush to judgement. I'd like to see the reverse myself, I believe I have legitimate questions. Thank you.
The die-break theory isn't very strong. The edges around the extra metal look wrong, more like the extra metal is welded to the coin. But it's this type of information he's looking for. I'm just trying to educate him as well as myself. However, it may be possible that this was a die-break with subsequent damage, unlikely though. I'd still like to see if he notices anything on the reverse.
Looks like a weld, like it was tacked to something, maybe to use as a toggle switch on some machinery. The reverse looks "pounded out", but after production, the reverse die would never be warped like in the photos. It's just massive post production (also called post mint - PMD) damage I'd say. A lot of people on here have seen wayyy too many of these and are getting tired of it (laughs), but now you know a bit more than you did before, so I'd say it's worth the post. Keep searching!
