What happened to this cent? (2002 D)

    Found this in a roll sent from the bank, very bad condition but was just wondering why this coin is looking so (not like zinc)...and if it was stripped, how does it still have detail? Please teach me. Thank you :D

    the copper plating is very thin. it would show all the detail if the coin were stripped down to the zinc.
