I have a few that I thought were sure things for a * grade. Anybody here own one? I would like to see what it takes for them to put that designation on an Indian Head Cent.
I dunno if there are any or not. But to get a star, the coin has to stand apart from the crowd. That being the case, it depends on the crowd. So I see it this way. If the crowd is known for being composed of rather ordinary and unexceptional coins, then when an exceptional coin comes along it's easy for that coin to get the star. But if the crowd is known for being composed of and with a lot of exceptional examples, then it's gonna be pretty hard for any 1 example to stand apart from that crowd.
Here are some examples: David Lawrence.. Check out this page of Indians. There are a couple proof stars. But what really stands out is how many of those didn't get a star. There are truly beautiful colors. http://images.goldbergauctions.com/php/chap_auc.php?site=1&lang=1&sale=41&chapter=26&page=1
Here are a few I was hoping to get a * on.... 1897 MS64RB.....really MS64Pink/Purple 1871 MS64BN.....huge luster, pastel coloring.
And this one was acquired this week (Photosealed, from Rick Snow) in an old NGC slab....I was thinking about getting it sent in for a new slab, and wondering if I should pay for a regrade. It definitely stands out amongst other MS64BNs
Although your coins have great eye appeal, I just don't see them as getting *'s. Just like Douglicious said, it truly has to be exceptional due to the amount of stunning colors throughout the series.
"What does it take to get NGC to put a * on Indian Head Cents?" I don't know. Maybe one that is deserving of a star?
