What do the FS numbers on coins signify? An Example is:

    1974-D 50C Double Die Obverse FS-015

Where can I read more on FS?

    Thank you, Jim

I too am wondering about this abbreviation. Sometimes it appears the coin collectors and dealers are creating thier own language. Still what does it mean? What is a FS-015? Who started it and why?

It's just a numbering system for various varieties, as listed in the Cherrypicker's Guide. The FS comes from the names of the authors, just like VAMs come from Van Allen and Mallis.

FS-015 is an abbreviated notation for an entry in "the Cherrypicker's Guide to Rare Die Varieties" by Bill Fivas and J.T. Stanton. The full identifier should be "FS#50C-015". This number refers to the coin pictured below:

The FS numbers are being reworked for the upcoming 4th edition, volume 2. The new numbering system can be researched by clicking this link.

If you see FS with no numbers and it is on a Jefferson Nickel though, then it means Full Steps on Monticello on the reverse. In some cases you will also see it used with other series with no numbers being used to mean Full Strike or Fully Struck.
