What Does Born April 2,1745 O.S. Stand For?

    On Jefferson's tombstone, what does the O.S. stand for??

    Does anyone know?

    If I remember correctly, when the British adopted the Gregorian calendar, it meant adding 12 days to the calendar. So under the so-called New Style, Jefferson was born April 14, 1745.

    A bit of historical trivia. The Russians were still using the Julian Calendar at the time of the Bolshevik Revolution in the fall of 1917. Under the Gregorian calendar, it took place in early November, but under the Julian it took place in October - hence the phrase "Red October." The Communists adopted the Gregorian calendar.
