We recently moved to a new residence where I have enough room to leave my collection set up. I was wondering what people use for a work surface. I currently use a terrycloth towel on an old desk we have. Probably not the "ideal" surface, but my current lincoln (all circulated) collection is not in any MS grades so I figure as long as I am not scooting them around, no harm. I was thinking of getting a jewelers felt display pad, especially if I start to get into higher grade coinage. I think I can get them for a few bucks. What do you guys use? Thanks, Troy
I use a desk!!...most of my rare coins and such are in slabs so they don't get nicked by the desk...but other than that I'm careful and nothing too big has happened! Speedy
Currently using a 5' x 3'.5" slate tabletop from an old laboratory that was torn apart. Great surface as it is smooth as a baby's bottom...
I have a 3' x 6' table in my office that serves as my desk. On it I have one of those month-at-a-glance desk calendars, 24" x 28". As each month passes I tear off and save the page. I use the backs of them as work surfaces. They are extremely clean and it is easy to tell when they start to get dirty. When that happens I just pitch the one I'm using and pull out another.
I either buy slabbed coins or put any high quality coin into a holder as soon as I get it so that part isn't an issue. For circulated coins I like a regular felt-type desk pad, but I never really thought about whether it's good for the coins. It's just seems safe.
plus it reminds you how you won some of those coins in your collection, right? I use my floor, usually - it's got carpet. All my coins are in some sort of protective holder, and stored in an in-house safe. When I pull them out to work with them, for whatever reason, I usually just set up wherever is convenient at the time.
I like the pool table idea. Now, I don't have a pool table, but I do have a poker table. It never occurred to me to use it for handling coins but now I plan to do it. The surface is similar material. Thanks for the inspiration.
