What do you think would make this design better?

I just got bored and for some reason, even though it's my own design it still doesn't look real (not that the design is based off anything but still)

Any suggestions?

I'd say, probably, the plain text at the left, black and red, and possibly the deep blue color overall. Fonts can make all the difference.

 

to me the bar code makes it look like a store cupon as does the red font. also paid in copper? now that is a new one.

It should probably have a watermark and signatures to make it more authentic looking. Agree about the red - I can't imagine a banknote designer selecting red on blue as a good color scheme.

I would like to exchange the color YELLOW for everything in RED, move the number 5 and the seal to NOT be in front of the bear, add signatures, and ditch the bar code.

Nice design so far - I like it. I don't mind the bar code so much myself.

I agree with replacing the red text with yellow. The bottom blank spot needs a signature over a title, such as Treasurer, Governor, or something. Then in very small font of the same color, under the words To The Bearer on Demand (Just noticed the bear and Bearer reference similarity now) you might put BOVBOVBOVBOV as a type of micro print for Bank of Veritas.... might get too small to appreciate though.
I was going to say serial number, but the bar code is there already.
How about the word FIVE below the payment clause in transparent letters???

 

I really like the right side with the bear. The left needs sometime more. Maybe a watermark? I would be interested in seeing the final product.

TLasch, are you a graphic artist of some kind? I like the look. Take NO offense at this, but I'd be happy to use that design as a label on a bar of handmade soap!!! Lucy

 

Haha note taken, not really a graphics specialist but I like designing/drawing my own novelty bank notes
I draw worse than I design on the computer however

 

The right side with the bear and the $5 look fine but there,s something missing on the
Left just to plain looking
