Penny silver reverse.jpg Cropped penny silver.JPG This penny has a little bit of copper at the edge on the obverse side. do this mean it is not legit or are there cases where legitimate coins come from the mint in this way ? I got this from a bank roll. Sorry about the cropping..New to all this.

My take on this is it is zinc plated from a junior high science experiment. It is a thin enough plating that if you heat it over a gas flame, the copper and zinc will alloy into a nice golden color. But, then again I haven't seen this coin in person either.

I could not get a real good blow up of the coin. But I don't think it left the mint like that ?

I think quartertapper nailed it. After mint alteration.

Impossible to tell if it was struck on an unplated planchet or plated after minting from those pictures, or probably any pictures. The differences would probably be subtle enough that you would probably have to see the coin in hand.
