Not real sure what to make of this....1942 Mercury Dime the circle appears to be at the same spot on the obverse and reverse. Any opinions?

Well that's a holled coin usually people will do this with an unciculated coin to use it as a jewlery piece not with this one some kid was just trying to damage a coin for fun

I figured someone tried to pierce but I couldn't think of anything that would cause the raised part, that's what I was really curious about, especially since there isn't a hole in it.

This is one that we probably will never determine. If it was drilled or punched, there would be a raised "rim" around the hole on one side only. Since there is a rim on both sides, and there is NO HOLE, the only possibility is that metal was added some way.

Two little rings soldered on? Not likely.

A hole drilled/punched and filled? Possible, but that doesn't explain the rim on both sides.

A small metal ring placed on the dies which then came together without a planchet in place, thereby creating circular damage on both dies which then created the raised ring on both sides of the coin? Possibility of .000000001% unless someone comes up with a second identical example.

Alien influence? As likely as anything else.
