After several deals with that seller, I would be almost positive that the coin has NOT been cleaned. So far as I know, every feedback he has for "cleaned" was because the buyer has not read the listing which clearly stated "cleaned". I am also reasonably sure that the coin is not as nice as it looks. Although I have seen evidence that he has photoshopped one pic, it was only one. However, he definitely knows how to take a pic to bring out the best of the coin and obscure the problems.
I would be quite sure that the coin has not been recolored. I will just say that photography is an art and photoshop is not a requirement.
My thoughts exactly. I have bought 2 coins from him that didn't look in hand as good as they did in the pictures.
rlm I have to disagree with you on this coin. The surfaces are so smooth for a coin that shows wear and such a even color, so I agree with Mike on this coin - and won't comment on the others since the pictures have been removed.
I am not disagreeing that the coin looks funky, just why it looks that way. I will give you odds, if you buy it, it will not have been cleaned. I do not know how he does it, but he has a method of taking pics that make them look like that. I know, with some playing, I can make my pics look that color (using the white balance). I have no idea how he manages to obscure the flaws and variations in color, but I do not believe he does what most people refer to as photoshopping.
I can believe what' RLM is saying, particularly if he's had the advantage of seeing one of these seller's coins in-hand. After taking a closer look at the seller's photos, it seems as if they are taken with bad white balance, giving them an odd look/color. Here's what I think the coin looks like...which looks a bit more natural but still a bit too "even" in my opinion.
The coin appears to have been whizzed. This would allow the coin to have the color it does and the top layer of metal has been removed and then the coin has been toned back over by artificial means.
p.s. the seller's photos appear to have used a diffused light which gives the coin an odd look. The photos are almost perfectly exposed, and show really good contrast too. They have been compressed and show artifacts of the JPEG compression including smoothing of the fields and some blocking in high-contrast areas.
AJ - We are talking semantics. The point is that the coins is not as nice as it appears. Leadfoot - If you look at the original pic, you will see that it is just slightly out of focus. That will do a lot to obscure the flaws. Just a general note, I have also found that a lot of his coins not showing the reverse have a weak reverse. On the plus side, he does honor his returns WmsJewelers - You lost another round with PayPal so we know what you opinion is worth.
Here is my guesstimate of what it looks like with the exception of some nicks. I do see a couple scratches on Abe's collar. Aside from that, it appears to be in pretty good shape except that it is a weakly struck coin. That is the best I can interpret from his pic.
