Aloha, I was searching MPL's and found a couple that is being sold as raw. What do you guys think? Business strike or Matte Proof? http://cgi.ebay.com/1912-LINCOLN1c-...40?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item53e3a22bc8 http://cgi.ebay.com/1912-Lincoln-Ce...34?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item43a1aed7de I feel a little weazy when it comes to bidding on raw MPL's being that there are some VERY good business strike cents out there. Mahalo for everyone's help.
I recommend you buy certified at that price level on Ebay. Aloha, There are probably reason(s) that those two coins are not in a first tier TPG holders. The blue one may have had some prior experience with cleaning and MS70. The non-blue one is being sold raw by "Great Southern Coins". You might search for threads that reference "Great Soutern Coins" to learn their history and how they may photograph their raw coins. Both coins may be genuine matte proof coins. I think they are both problem coins. The coin color & surfaces don't look natural to me in the photos. The current bid on one is only $23 but that will go up. When the bid goes up, I would just watch it & not bid on it myself.
You are wise to be wary. None of these appear to be MPLs. To confirm one way or the other I'd like to have the coin in-hand along with an attribution guide like was recently published. Even then, some are deceptive. Frankly, this is a coin I would NOT purchase unslabbed -- simply too much risk.
MPL's are not my thing, but I have picked up a bit around here. They are supposed to have square rims. Notice the GSC coin. Those rims look square. GSC over grade their coins, enhance their pix, and sell cleaned coins, but I have never heard of them selling counterfeit or otherwise false coins. My guess is that is a proof coin, but cleaned or otherwise not gradable. Now, if you compare GSC's coin to the other, those rims are not even similar. I sincerely doubt your first coin is a MPL.
I agree with Rlm. The first coin is not (IMO) a matte proof cent. The second one appears to be, but I would be prepared to look at it very carefully ( have reference sources available) within their return period. At a good price to overcome any return costs and problems, it would be worth a look-see.
After further review, the 2nd coin does appear to be a MPL, but again, I'd want to see the coin in-hand, and regardless it appears cleaned. That doesn't change my opinion on buying these coins slabbed -- particularly if there is ANY question as to your ability to authenticate these coins and/or in online purchases -- BUYER BEWARE!!!
I don't know about these. The pics on both don't really show the rims and marks to surely tell that they are MPL's. I just don't feel safe buying raw ones like that, unless I knew for SURE it was a MPL. But no one can really tell for sure online. Mahalo for all your help guys.
