We all get an itch to buy something new and depending on when it happens you may have to wait. What do you do in your free time. Scenario 1: You just have a large purchase to get a tough piece for your collection. It drains the collecting account quite a bit...well actually a lot. Now you have a few weeks to wait for the account to replenish. What do you do to keep yourself occupied while waiting? Scenario 2: You just went to the monthly coin show. The excitement of the show and the few days leading up to it were awesome. Now the show is over, there are no coin shops in town, and your club doesn't meet that month. What do you do to keep yourself occupied while waiting? Let's hear some stories. Personally I research my next purchase or read a little about the time period of my last purchase.
I actually keep a bunch of partial albums on hand to slowly fill with lower value coins while I'm in between major purchases. Either that or seek out awesome or undervalued coins that are basically a steal. Toned Roosevelts, Washingtons, Mercs, and Jeffersons come to mind for pretty cheap toned coins. And I tend to lean towards Jeffersons for undervalued early proofs with nice eye appeal or circulated seated quarters that are somewhat tough coins in higher grades. My other backup is cheap eye appealing foreign coins with some tone or working on some of my Mexican sets. If all else fails and I have an itch that needs scratching I just buy some silver.
Look at coins, fill wish lists, try to research coins already purchased or future ones...starting to build a set of National Park and 50 States sets from circulation.
I hunt for state quarters in PGCS MS66 flag holders. They're cheap enough and uncommon enough to keep me busy. I have about 40 so far, so 60 more to go.
Easy - what I do between purchases is keep looking for the right coins or my next purchase. I might buy a little silver.
Read, read, read. And the coin show radio. Listened to almost 100 episodes in 2 months. Sometimes that keeps me from spending money I don't have
I hunt for the next coin on my want list. Currently I am looking for a high AU to MS-63 1839 braided hair large cent to complete my date set. They are available, but they are either way to expensive, poorly struck or just plain ugly. I'd rather wait for a coin that I want rather than replace it later on.
There is a link to it here if you are looking at a computer, but it doesn't show on my phone. Otherwise just google coin show radio and you shouldn't have any problem finding it.
