Zinc Rot on the D mint mark. This happens with copper plated zinc cents. Plating is exposed revealing the zinc underneath.

There is a line under the d and a spot above the date. Is that really a cause of wear??

its damage, the thin copper plating was damaged and the zinc underneath is exposed to the elements causing zinc rot, and it will continue to rot and push the copper plating..

That coin is made of zinc not copper. It's showing the first signs of rotting which is common.
