I know many recent threads have been devoted to coin photography, but I'd like to focus specifically on the camera. I have some very expensive photography equipment (Canon Digital Rebel with a 135mm macro zoon lens and an add-on close-focus lens) that takes really crappy coin pictures. I have gathered from the discussions that the key is a lens that provides a high magnification, in the range of 12-15X. Does anyone have experience withe Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H7? It has a 15X lens standard. It would actually cost me far less than a more elaborate lense for my Canon Digital Rebel. I'd appreciate people telling me what camera they use and if they are happy with its ability take high-quality coin photos. Also, if you are familiar with the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H7 or a similar model, please let me know what you experience has been with it.
I found this site. Haven't bought anything yet, but it appears to have a lot of info. http://www.tabletopstudio.com/documents/coin_photography.htm
Canon A560 Same here a Canon A560. It takes decent enough pictures for eBay, but mine just does not do well for die varieties, etc. I just cannot get good focus How about you "rlm's cents"
I use a Canon PowerShot S3 IS. No zoom, I just put it on super macro. I'm happy with the pictures it takes but I do have to work on the lighting. Lou
I have not been happy with my Nikon Coolpix S9 or my Olympus SP-500 for coin photography. I have not been able to get good close-up shots of coins smaller than dollar size with these cameras. So just yesterday I ordered a Nikon D300 with a Sigma 105mm lens. (Thanks to Leadfoot for his input.) I'll let you know how I like it once I take delivery and put it to use.
It must be able to focus very close, then. My lenses can't get closer than about 18" and at that distance the images are too small without magnification.
Great pics RLM... but I cannot for the life of me figure out how you got the same coin's obverse and reverse in the same picture... jeankay
I found I can get more detail without out the zoom. With the macro, it will focus down to 5 cm. They make another camera with 6X zoom that will focus down to 0.0 (not a typo).
I just bought the kodak v1233. 12mp , HD , wow, I am amazed what this camera can do!!!!! I got it off amazon for 170 with shipping. Awesome camera for the price!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sony Cybershot - actually the wifey's. She just got it and I've actually managed to take a couple nice coin pics with it. I even have a tripod from bygone days. Now I have to set up a coin studio!!!
I'm using my wife's pink point and shot S9 Nikon. Would really like to upgrade to a nice K100 pentax or D50 nikon, put with that kinda money I could have a nice ms-63 1924's or 1927's peace dollar. Gotta have priorities I guess.
Fujifilm S5000. Lots of purple fringing. Not a great camera for coins but not bad, I guess. It would help tremendously if I had more knowledge of photography. Especially knowledge of how to take pix of shiny objects. (And let's face it, coins are shiny -- sometimes like little irregularly shaped mirrors.)
Can you post some pictures of coins you took with it? I looked it up. It doesn't have a big zoom (only 3X) but it has a macro mode that permits focusing as close as 2". I think that's the key.
