I just sold this https://www.ebay.com/ulk/itm/252303323389 . I paid $14 for it. Before when I've sold and item like this it went for about $25 and that's what I was expecting to get this time. The guy I bought it from said they never sell. What did I buy and did I sell it for a good price?

The winning bid was $56.00 with 14 bids. You said they go for about $25.00 and the buyer said they never sell. Is it early or am I confused? The buyer paid $56.00 for an item that never sells???? o_Oo_Oo_O

He said HE bought it for $14, but he sold it on Ebay for $56. He also says he sees others not even selling for $25 at times, and it wondering if his was somehow different and if $56 was a fair price to get for his piece.

At least my understanding of the question. I don't know anything about small currency though OP, so I cannot help.

Well, I'm not a National collector but the Friedberg catalog says there are only 278 Small Size notes "known" for this Charter, so maybe this is a scarcer type.

Spot on. Sorry if it was confusing.

But the serial number shows that they should have printed over 29k...

278 is a huge number for Nationals. Another one sold in January for $55.00 on Ebay. Seems like you got a good buy and market price on the sale.

Could also have to do with personal interest in the particular bank or place. My sister worked in a bank in Winchester, KY and had someone to deposit several thousand in bills from the Madison Bank of Richmond, KY. She got several of them (of course at face value) and I got a $10 from her.

As with coins, Sully, it doesn't matter how many were produced; all that matters today is how many survive (don't let the guys who focus only on mintage tell you otherwise) coupled with demand.

You also may have just experienced the fact that there are different markets, and is why in past threads I pressed you to know yours. As an example, let's say that the guy you bought the note from only sells locally. Perhaps they don't sell in HIS market, but by offering on ebay, you moved the note to a completely different market where there apparent is a demand for them, at least in that price range. I've said this before too, but there are people who make a fairly decent living just by taking items from one market, often simply buying from the right B&Ms, shows, whatever, and reselling on ebay. The key to success though is, again, to know the items you're buying/selling and to know your market. You may have gotten lucky on this one, but unless careful, next time the opposite could happen. Congrats on a fine sale.

Could you link me to this book? I would like to buy a copy.

This is a case where I knew what I was selling but I didn't know what I was selling. I knew there was a market for national currency on eBay but now it appears I may be the only one buying around here.

Ya know @BooksB4Coins you've really been on point lately with some of your posts. We haven't had any back alley stand-offs in a few months, we need to go a couple rounds again soon or I wont be able to consider you my arch nemesis anymore:oops:
