I thought this was cool so I bid on it and won. Only problem is I don't know anything about its history or rarity. Anyone have information regarding this specimen... (Seller's photos)
American Bank Note Company series 1929 $10 SPECIMEN note. These used to come up for auction all the time, but I am seeing less of them recently. Printed in the 80's. ABNC also printed a multi-colored Specimen that is seen less often and sells for quite a bit more. http://currency.ha.com/itm/miscella...pany-specimen-10-series-1929/a/141530-84006.s
There are many varieties of these -different colors, different security features, etc. They were handed out by a ABNC executive in the 1980s as examples of their capabilities. You used to find them in junk boxes.
I think it's cool. I don't collect paper as I too have little knowledge as to it's value or history and less time to read the books to learn about such. That being said I have several pieces I have purchased just because I saw a post like this and thought wow that's cool. I have a $3 Cook Island because of the legend behind the vignette, I have an uncut sheet of Thai currency depicting the 50th anniversary of the emperor, some US fractional notes because they are awesome and some Chinese Teller notes that look like US currency used for training. All of these were inexpensive but I like them because I learned about them here and otherwise would have never heard of them.
Good stuff, thank you all. I had searched online and couldn't find anything regarding its history or how many were made. I don't suppose anyone knows how many were made except maybe the folks at ABNC. I also tried looking at how many have been graded (population reports) but PMG and PCGS don't seem to have that information on their websites. I am going to try and contact them directly.
I have one that they put out in the '80's that is a reissue of a NJ state banknote from the 1850's. I think I paid about $15 for it.
