Hi everybody, does anybody have any knowledge about this mystery coin?????, It seems to be some arabic and chinese or japanese letters????? but yet it's one dollar, i am so confused. Please any thoughts?????
Naboul, these coins are silver. They are called the British Trade Dollar. There are a few scarce dates such as the 1935.The mintmark,if present,is found on the middle prong of Britannia's trident on the reverse. Aidan.
More precisely, genuine BTDs are silver. More than half of those I've seen raw on EBay have been fakes. Some are obviously cast copies, from their porous surfaces, many are obvious fakes if you know what real ones look like, and others are fakes offered by people who probably don't know what they have. Those are the ones where the seller replies "22 grams" or something similar to an inquiry about weight.
Help From Roy Hi ROY I have the Simon & Schuster world coin catalogue the 87 edition I use all the time. But it does not list any trade dollars, can you give me any info on what reference book you use to find foreign trade dollars?
Best resources I know of are known as the Krause catalogs Standard Catalog of World Coins. It is broken up into 4 big city sized phone book volumes based on centuries - 1601 - 1700, 1701 - 1800, 1801 - 1900, and 1900 to date.
GD I took your advice I will be buying a 20 frans rooster gold thanks, looks like foreign is the way I will be going.
Bruce, have you thought about buying a 1/10 Krugerrand as well as a French Rooster 20 Francs? I recently picked up a Manx 1/10 Angel. Aidan.
This is a British trade dollar. The coin pictured is NOT certainly genuine, in that condition....about $30 ( If real!)
I think that it could be made from either lead or white metal. Both of these metals are dull-grey & are not attracted to a magnet. Aidan.
A British Trade Dollar. Used in the far East 3 denominatios : One Dollar , Satu Ringgit (Malay : 1 Ringgit , in "Huruf Jawi" , based on Arabic letters) , Chinese denomination
