What causes this to happen? On rim too.

Damage or some Die error? I noticed it's on the rim too. Either way I donno this seemed kinda cool. I like looking for errors for than varieties.
This looks kinda uniform I'm curious how the rim looks normal and intact yet not having the outer color.
Thank you in advance for any information!

Damage, It's been run over by a car quite a few times, looks like somebody made it worse by taking some coarse sandpaper to the edges...

Not an error at all. Looks like somebody put it on a belt sander or something like that, making the zinc below visible.

    It's copper plated zinc.

    Welcome to the CT Family!

The high points of the coin have certainly have been hit with a sander or sand paper, as already stated.

Good pictures, but Please, to make it easier for us. When you upload your pictures choose 'Full Image' instead of 'Thumbnail'.

    Thanks

Actually, you can make one of these for yourself. Just take any copper-plated zinc cent and place it on your kitchen floor. Place your shoe on it and rub back and forth exactly 169 times. You should see very similar results...imo...Spark

I changed the photos in my other post to full images, made duplicates but it's a 1990p I found, just curious on opinions about the ear. If it's some md that means nothing or if it's a double lobe. Thank you for the welcome!

It should! If only pennies could talk what stories they could tell.
I just found this one the other day.

OP's penny looks like the typical dryer coin. Sad to see the wheat penny, obvious BB gun damage.

The original cent was caught between the rotating drum and the fixed basin in a clothes washer. It was caught there for a few loads of laundry. Either it finally worked it's way free (doubtful) or was removed by the launderer (usually me in my family) and put back into circulation. They are easy to make...I make a few each year.

If it could talk, it would definitely scream first, talk later.
