    What causes it?
I have found a couple pennys that have been corroded from the dirt.

I just want to know what makes it do that.

    thanks much :)

Simple chemical reaction. When cents were made of copper, they were less likely to do this, as copper is a relatively stable element. Now that they're just plated with copper, the coins are much more likely to react to whatever chemical (naturally occuring or otherwise) is in the soil.
