Yeah, looks like some type of chemical(s) did that. But then again, it also reminds me of what coins looked like after we hit them with a sandblaster. When I was a kid, I had a friend whose dad had a sandblaster. Unattended kids & a full sandblaster, what possibly could go wrong? Coins and wasps didn't stand a chance.
I think you coin has been whizzed clean on a bench mounted wire wheel. Its got that wavey look to it. I think most acids will dissolve all surfaces at the same rate.
