Over the say.., last decade, I have acquired some 40 Pounds BP, couple a few Euros, Etc. Etc. In this neck of the woods, the banks will not cash anything but paper, yet this is all current and legit coinage, what am I missing online, Why won't they exchange it? Have you had the same Problem's?
Yes I live in Michigan, and tried to take some canadian change to the bank to turn into American money, that they only take currency for exchange, that's B.S ! Funnier yet, they put the currency in a bag, and sent it away, or burned it !!!!! LOL !!!!!!!!!!!!
While I prefer coins for low value payments (denominations up to €2 - even €5 would be fine with me), it does get costly for banks and forex services to deal with them, in terms of storage, shipping, and so on. So even places that do buy foreign paper money from customers will usually say No to coins. Some specialized services buy coins too but at a hefty surcharge. Think one third of the amount or so. Also, some Americans have a hard time understanding that in some countries cash (coins, even notes) may expire. You usually have a couple of years to get them exchanged, but after that period they are collectors items only. Bottom line for travelers: Unless you do it for numismatic purposes leave your foreign cash where you got it. Christian
-----find someone going on holiday to that country and sell it to them at a discount, they will be happy and you will get something for it
