Hello there coint talk friends, I found this Washington quarter when I was coin roll hunting and was wondering what can cause this type of damage?

I think some kind of wire cutter or tin snips, as mentioned. Definite toolmarks, for sure.

The Coinstar machine was trying to grab it and it was not cooperating, so it used the Wolverine claws.

That quarter would be a "rare" mint error (which is not) to a certain member here on CT. :punch:

you'll see a lot of coins with those marks on them. Maybe not as many but many people try to do many things to coins.

There's tons of uses for coin in the "artsy" world, which includes cutting coins for designs and such.
    from large complex design work

to many simple at home stuff with coins. just google out "jewelry from coins"

think of how long it took to do this

imagine doing this from your inherited silver coin hoard ...

I can see it... a bunch of guys talking at a construction site over coffee. One of the guys has a new pair of wire cutters and shows it to the group. Another guy pulls out a quarter and says "Well I bet that new fancy set of cutters can't cut this quarter in half?" New cutter guy says "Oh yeah, give my that quarter" and tries to cut it in half and fails. Then all the other guys try, because new cutter guy is a wuss. They all fail and go back to work. The new new cutter is now just as trashed as the quarter..

Alien abduction quarter. After it was thoroughly examined onboard the spaceship, it was brought back to earth, dropped off and mysteriously found back in general circulation.

And he would have listed all 20 reasons why it's an error.

Only the person that damaged that coin would know.
