A light hearted question here: what would be the correct terminology for people like us who are fascinated by coins: Geeks, Nerds, or like our own H.T says: Peeps ? (whatever that means). I have seen all 3 of them being used to denote a 'numismatist'. It is probably my lack of in depth knowledge of the english language, but i am only familiar with the term "Nerd" as not being quite politically correct (or polite), whilst the others i am not familiar with at all. So what are we?
Geek: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geek Nerd: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nerd Coin folks are an interesting lot. Both of these terms seem to fit that segment of the population. However, your coin lover is anti-social by nature and prefers to work in seclusion either in a basement, garage or spare room that is "his" space and free from other distractions. With the advent of the internet ..the coin guy is gaining technological skills and is known to spend hours online researching coins or communicating with like minded individuals. These other like minded folks are also squirreled away in seculsion from the world in their own little anti-social solitary domain.
Short for "people". Hip, cool gangsta slang. Like Snoop Dogg. "Geeks" and "nerds" tends to mean people who have a great deal of knowledge in a narrow area, particularly technology / computing. Especially if they are "socially challenged".
I just prefer to think of myself as someone smart enough to collect something of historical and monetary value, versus most of my friends who blow their money on beer and motorcycles and $500 Nascar seats. Guy~
Why not just coin collectors, enthusiast, or specialists. Why not just coin collectors, enthusiast, or specialists. Or coin people, people who study U.S. or World coins, hobbyist, experts, or "persons hooked on coins". Or my favorite, "money men", (sorry about the gender biase).
I think alot of us are more of a type of Historian who happen to value the knowledge of rare coins. Some are extremely talented photographers as well. Geeks?!....maybe
I'll go with peeps (people) but really couldn't care less what others call us , they're the ones missing out on a great hobby , and if one of our own call me a coin geek or nerd to me it's a compliment . Long live the Coin ( ) fill in your own word here . rzage
This post is funny on several levels... First, that Eduard thought "peeps" was shorthand for numismatist. Second, that the one who confused Eduard in the first place agreed, as did others. Then again, maybe peeps is a new term and I'm just behind the times.....
That's funny. I've never associated "geek" or "nerd" with numismatics. Just regular people, I'd think. One thing that's great about it is that the general level of friendliness among collectors is very high in comparison to other activities. That's a nice thing.
my family thinks im a coin nerd/geek, especially my sister. but i dont act like a geek or nerd. if you were to ask people at my school that know me, they would never think that im a coin collecter because everyone thinks that it is really nerdy. i dont act like a nerd/geek but i am at heart
I believe I'm a coin person (peep). Although there was that time I found a new IHC Snow variety that I felt like a coin nerd. That rush of accomplishment or pride of doing something numismatically significant. Bruce
I am just a collector, but have been called all three. Does not really matter to me when people refer to my coin collecting.
