So I have five of these proofs. I got them from my uncle when I was young. I remember he had a massive stack of these on the table and said that I could pick out five for myself. They have been in a box ever since. I have not been able to find anything anywhere online about them.......
Coincidentally, I saw the two space-themed ones at my local coin shop a few months ago. They were part of a "set" of 10 and there wasn't any further information available on whether they were intended to be a set or if they were just similarly themed. They all came from a non-US country, I remember that. The guess at the time was they were minted together but the trouble was they weren't indicated to be silver percentage and so bought some ambiguity to things. Maybe the other side says so? Proofing this post, I realize my answer is mostly useless, but at least someone saw them I really like space-themed coins myself - very nice! If you don't get an answer, let me know and I can stop by the coin shop and see if they have any further information. They've since been sold but the owner might remember details hopefully better than I have here. -L
The edge of the coin has a small polished section that says Sterling followed by three proof marks and then 4011. The first mark is a symbol that I can't really place. The second is a different number on each coin that ranges from 73-77. The third is a capital P. All three are bordered by a square with rounded corners. So essentially it's: Sterling * 77 P 4011
I'm afraid that must not be what I was looking at but they sure are similar! I remembered that the ones I saw were 99% silver and from the Marshall Islands. I'm afraid I can't help on yours, though. Sorry. Neat coins!
I found someone who has the Skylab coin and he did not know much about it either. He seems to think they could be from the Lombardo mint in Canada because of the octagonal coin cases. But no other information on them. I just noticed all of the coins say NCS - 197#. And whatever the year corresponds to the two digit year with the hallmark. Anyone know what NCS is pre 2001?
The marshall islands coins have their so called value showing. What do the other sides look like? What does it say? Or are these just some private bullion type rounds?
I have one of the Space Shuttle $50 silver proofs, it's actually a nice looking coin. My dad got it for me when I was like 10 cause I was all into space and such. I know it's not worth a lot to many people but it's a keeper for me, sentimental value and memories.
To the OP, these coins look like specialized commemorative silver coins minted by the Franklin Mint. I don't know much about them though, but the resemble some of the types I've seen in the past. You may have to contact them to find out more, perhaps they could tell you if they produced these since I don't see them available now on their website. http://www.franklinmint.com
That's really your decision, if they hold no value to you or sentimental value and you like selling coins to make some money, sure, go for it. I don't think there'd be a big demand for them so they're likely just worth melt value at most.
