Counterstamped with an 1804, but cleaned and damaged to hell. What are the chances the actual host coin was an 1804? Is it too damaged to identify the die characteristics of an 1804? https://www.ebay.com/itm/325869948753?
Sure! If I got a roached large cent with a date that I thought might be 1804, the very first thing that would occur to me is "let's obliterate that date area by counter-stamping it 1804!" I don't collect the series, so I'd have a hard time ruling out the possibility that a dateless LC was an 1804. Fortunately, this seller has made it easy for me.
Probably someone's pin number, they just were too lazy to drill a hole and put it on their key chain.
There is enough left on the reverse to tell it does not match the reverse of Sheldon 266 (1804). I am almost 100% sure it is NOT an 1804 cent.
