Just admired this Salzburg AV 25 Dukaten featured in Heritage "Paramount" Sale. Some dumkopf etched "25" to ruin this beautifull coin. Maybe the Salzburg Mint could have put a value marker on coin/ still no reason for some member of the nobility to ruin the coin. Coin should never have been used for commerce in first place.
Still, it is gorgeous. I love whatever it is coming down out of the heavens on the obverse! hail? Gosh, there is a great deal going on on that coin!
I think that if I had the $$$$$....which I do not/ that graffiti would ruin the coins appeal for me. But there is a 10 Louis d'or from Louis XIII for you even though its an 19th century restrike. John
You are so right, they really knew how to produce magnificent coins in 1594. Had I been around that year, I would have gotten a freshly minted one from Salzburg Mint and put it in a safe/ secure velvet lined box. They had no SAFLIP holders back in those days
Graffiti or not, it was still deemed worthy of illustrating in an early 20th century catalogue - there's wax in a window on the tower base section. A provenance for someone there if they want it.
I bet your right, that coin will sell for1M+ Still wonder why the mint did not add the value markers to these massive coins. Salzburg struck some odd denominations.
