How bad can you get. The mint did not encapsule the medal in the 4 coin set put out on Jan 5th. I bought a number of them on ebay and I already sent one back because of hairline scratches on the medal which is un-protected. This is the item that sets the set apart and they did not cover it. With this in mind I wonder if the grading co.'s would grade the set and then slab the medal. It seems to me that a high grade of this medal could bring a big value number sometime down the line. With the medal being exposed to damage a high grade of 67 to 69 would be a great find. Any input on this?? BWJR
I too was surprized when I opened the set and there it was raw and exposed. Worse yet this being winter and the weather being below zero when it arrived in the mail, the medal was completely covered with moisture when I opened it. Fearing damage from the moisture I carefully tried to dry it and ended up marking the surface. Did I mention both medals in my 2 sets were upside down.
When my set came I TURNED the medal upside down as I am sick and tired of seeing and hearing about Jefferson. Needless to say I am already getting a real kick out of folks talking about the NEW BUFFALO nickel and IT will always be the buffalo nickel---NOT the Jefferson nickel!!! I just hope the coin community DOESN'T take forever getting Congress to overturn the stupid law making Jefferson permanent on our nickel! What a joke by the Virginia representitives and all our representitives and congressmen who REALLY don't give a thought to what they are doing and it REALLY pays well with great benefits.
Unfortunately, this is yet another example of the numerous complaints, we hear, about the modern US Mint's quality control problems. My only thoughts are, that as long as collector/investors continue to support their (us Mint) programs, there will be no need to improve the quality of their merchandise.
On 06JAN05, I ordered three sets that were immediately available. They were scheduled to be shipped 22JAN05. On 29JAN05, I tracked the status of the sets and was informed that they were rescheduled to be shipped 13FEB05. On 10FEB05, I tracked the status of the sets and was informed that they were unavailable. I contacted my senator to make sure that he was aware of the US Mint's westward fiasco.
Well unless they tell you they won't send them you should still get them soon...I too have a few bones to pick with the mint... I'm thinking about buying some off a guy...how much would y'all say there worth?? Speedy
Well Speedy it appears they are going to cost you quite a bit more than the original cost. I recently saw them selling for over $90 per set from a dealer that usually offers a fair price. To me that seemed a bit high on this set but I'm no expert. Maybe they are going to sell for around that price. From what I am seeing, if you can get it for less you might want to jump on it. Originally, I stated how much I disliked the sets appearance when it arrived. Now it's starting to look a little better!! A collector friend of mine lauphed when I ordered my sets, calling it "junk". Now he is begging me to sell him a set.
Thanks Steve, Well, I was looking at some on e-bay pretty cheap but today they went over my limit---But y'all better be glad I didn't buy any because it stands to reason that anything I buy will go down in value...that is one reason I don't buy gold Thanks Speedy
Coin & Medal Sets I phoned the mint to complain that my Coin and Medal Set that I ordered 1/6 had been BO'd twice since that date, and it was now my appearing as Not Available" on the mint website. The person on the phone, I will not begin to try and pronounce her hame. She told me, "The mint ran-out ot these sets, and they were trying to get more." She also said, and I paraphrase this statement, "The back ordered sets will be the first ones shipped around March 31st." Are some customers now going to receive defective sets that were returned to the mint by other customers for some reason? My next question is, do they have any Americans who work at the mint? I mean anyone who speaks fluent English and can talk on the telephone to customers? So the mint is now going to "get more." Interesting. Jim
Hey Speedy sounds like you won't have to buy any to do that. If the mint is going to start making more sets they will bring down the value on their own. The mint stated that they would limit the set to 25,000 sets in 2004. they never said they couldn't make more in 2005.
I got an official letter from the US Treasury saying that unless they got returns or cancelled orders, my order for this set will be cancelled. I don't see how this could be fair. How could people be allowed to place an order for a set that is sold out. Oh well.
Cancelled Order I got hosed by the mint too. I just checked my order tracking and found out that my order was cancelled. I called them. At least I got someone who could speak English. She told me I would be getting a letter soon. I told her I wanted the coins that were listed on my order confirmation but she just kept saying that I would be getting a letter. I odered within the first 10 minutes that they went on sale. I don't understand this. Is there some way that we can form a letter-writing campaign to all of the Senators, or something? They acted pretty quickly when their toes got stepped on with that bogus WTC coin. Now they want to impose fines. It's be nice if the customers that got hosed by the mint could penalize them in some way. (I guess I'm done venting.)
I received my one set about 2-3 weeks ago. The dollar had a small scratch on it. I thought about sending it back, but then I realized, I would not have anything. SOOO I kept it.
I'll bet this didn't faze them one bit, did it? This seems more than fair to me, doesn't it please you? Absolutely! It seems that we have "collectors" that just can't pass up the opportunity for a quick buck, so they order way more than they have use for. Those that don't turn into quick profit, are returned to the mint.. Why do you think the Mint's shipping fees went up so high. For the same reason! I guess it all depends on your interpretation of "American" now doesn't it? I'm fairly sure they don't have any body there from the South Pole. "fluent" English! Wow, when did this become a requirement for phone operator or receptionist since the PC crowd came into existance? I sure hope so, and I hope you will have nice day when your coins arrive.
I received a reply from Sen. Mitch McConnell yesterday. He forwarded my correspondence to the US Mint Director's office demanding an explanation for the fiasco. He intends to share the director's response with me. I ordered the sets online and learned that individuals ordered sets the next day, 07JAN05, and received them.
I finally received my two sets. They didn't look all that great. That medal looks like a cheap plastic token. There were fingerprints on it and the other coins weren't encapsulated correctly. The capsules were not all the way closed on one side. I could tell these sets had been returned. I may have one of the medals with the hairline scratches. lol
Quality control has gone down the tubes at the mint!! 95% of the proofs I receive look like circulation strike and scratched up!! You want to see some REALLY ugly coins just look at you mint sets under a microscope, I remember when THEY looked PL. But as mentioned
Thats why I'm just waiting till the banks get them. They are still uncirculated, and they are only $2, and no shipping!
I ordered 5 sets at 12:20 P.M. EST by pnone on opening day. I received them about 2.5 weeks later. Lucky I guess. The sets looked pretty good. I always start ordering about noon on the first day, unless like the 05 11pc. proof set I can order at midnight online. I'm not home during the day and am taking no chances on high demand items. I surely hope a 2005 version of the the 4 pc. set comes out as I will wear my fingers out to get em.
Well, well . . . this weekend, the US Mint finally notified me by email that I was not going to get the sets. This was six weeks after I determined that I was not going to receive them. Great customer service!
