I recently got my second of this series: Germany, 1979, 5 marks, commemorative, 0.625 Ag 150th anniversary of the German Archeological Institute Cost me $10, which is not an amazing bargain, but an OK price for these. To show the effects of inflation, here's one I bought in 1997. Was $2.50 at the time, which was more than melt but less than face value. Germany, 1973, 5 marks, commemorative, 0.625 Ag 500th anniversary of the birth of Copernicus If you enjoy this series and have any examples, please post them!
My father was stationed at Landstuhl Germany when I was 7-9. I used to stand outside of the PX and the G.I.s would give me some coins. (They must have thought I was a local.) I kept them for a while, but with my father being transferred about every year, they got lost somehow. I wasn't old enough to know what kind of treasure I had. That was 1953-57. He got transferred to Mannheim when I was 17. I worked at the PX for a while but I found out that I could make more money bagging groceries for tips. My first trip to Germany I was given script/paper money? I miss the coins I got from back then.
