I see a well worn surface, PMD gouges through the date and a hit on the MM which shifted the vertical. But then I could be seeing things as well.
The hit on the D looks to be at the same angle as the hit on the 0 and on the 9. Post-Minting Damage.
My pareidolia this late at night "sees a '5' and a 'P' on Abe' coat hem. but that is of course only my imagination. Jim
Did you reference the RPM lists on Wexler, VarietyVista, or the other Lincoln cent site who's name slips my mind at the moment? ~Rob
You don't need a shrink. You just think you see something that is not there. This is actually a normal thing for new collectors. What you're actually seeing is Damage.
Check out the following resources and compare your coin to those on the list. As I have discovered when searching for coins, there is more to a coin when you discover what you think is an error or an RPM, for example, such as die gouges and cracks and scratches used to verify it. https://doubleddie.com/770297.html http://www.varietyvista.com/02a LC RPMs Vol 1/RPMs 1940D.htm I am a new coin collector, and as Nut says, I have seen things that are not there. I still fall victim to my eyes and rely on the different perspectives and points of view from those on this site collecting far longer than I have been... the experts. ~Rob
