A 50 cent note (I don't know the catalog number; don't have my books with me ), with a reclining Justice on the front and a reddish back. Appears to be separate front and back pasted together. Signatures appear to be autograph, and "Register" and "Treasurer" also appear to be hand-written in tiny letters.

Anybody have an idea what exactly this thing might be?

A picture of the note will be the best way to give you a solid answer.

Removed from a shield and glued together to pass as fifty cents, maybe.

It would be from the 3rd printing or specimen series. There are two. #'s 1343 with no surcharge, and 1347 with back surcharges` "A-2-6-5", both have "Red" backs. As above, it does sound like two specimens have been put together, or from the shield, as stated above. :)-O)
