I have found a 1960 penny that is thicker than a normal penny. It is gold in color. there no mint stamp just the date and it weighs more than a normal penny. has anyone ran across one of these before......

Any way you can post a photo of it?

And if you can't, can you give a really detailed description (like, is it as thick as two other pennies stacked atop one another? Are the details sharp or worn? Can you weigh it?)

Hi polly1237, Welcome to the forum. Your penny was probably gold plated after it left the mint.

The penny has very sharp features not worn or dull. I will attempt to put a picture on the forum, However it will not be today. It is not quite as thick as 2 pennies togatherwhat puzzles me is there is not letter on it like there are with other pennies.

Hi Polly, and [IMG] to the forum.

I'm going to base a wild guess on your concern about mint marks, that you are talking about a U.S. cent, not a British, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand, South African, or other penny. ;)

I'm going to take another wild guess that you are less then 30 years old, and don't remember that except for WW II silver nickles, the primary U.S. Mint facility in Philadelpha has only been mint marking its coins for about 20 years or so.

I'm going to take a final guess that you live closer to the Pacific than to the Atlantic, and generally see coins from the Denver Mint, or older cons from San Francisco before they limited their output to proofs; so you didn't notice that Philadelphia cents still have no mint marks.

So, how did I do Dr. Watson?

Well Roy you are correct about some things. It is US cents. And what general location. But I am not under 30 ( wish I were but not the case) And to be honest with you I did not know that philadelphia cents do not have mint marks. See heres the thing I only keep odd coins. I am not a collector. I just like the weird ones.............
