I found this 1999 penny in a roll and it has a metalic ring around it. The rest of the penny is copper plated except this capped metal ring around the edge. Anyone know anything?

My guess: Damaged after leaving the mint, probably from a dryer, worth 1 cent.

but, it looks cool so I would keep it till I found a cooler one.

    He is correct.

Coins that get stuck in the fin of a commercial clothes dryer that then tumble around in that dryer fin for awhile will have the edges rounded over like that. We've seen it several times before. I have posted several responses with pictures on these when they turn up.

    Thanks,
    Bill

When the edges get rounded, on a copper/zinc cent, the copper layer on the edge gets worn off and the inner zinc shows as the "rim" you describe.
