I found it today..wondering if it was made this away or why it looks this way. It weighs 3.2 grams. The head side is silver colored...well u can see the pictures for yourself.
It's worth 2 cents total given the 95% copper. The plating on the coin is what you see on the obverse.
I'm thinking " What plating? ". As you point out it's 95 % copper mixed alloy. This is a 1971. The plating didn't start until mid-1982. To me, the obverse looks like it has had some sort of caustic soda put on it. It's hard to say. This is just a photograph. Hersh, does any of that bubbly white stuff come off? It could be what others call environmental damage. Which means that something, a chemical, a harsh cleaner, an acid, or something , got on the coin and caused that bumpy, bubbly effect. Just wait and others will add their opinions. Meanwhile, Welcome to Coin Talk !! BTW, I voted ??
It is solder or some similar metal that melted. The reverse has some heat tint from the solder. Sorry but it's not an error
Hook, you misunderstood the response.. He meant deliberate plating. Cents before 1982 were use in science experiments where they plated them. You haven't seen all the threads here on CoinTalk with people claiming to have found Silver Cents? There are dozens of them! But.. the Cent in question does look like old solder that was applied to it.
Create your threads over at the Error Coins forum of CoinTalk.. not the What's it worth. First find out if it is a Mint Error or not. Most of the time weird looking coins are just Post Mint Damage such as yours. If we can determine that it is an error then you can ask about worth.
