I always think it's funny when I see signs that advertise they buy broken gold. Like broken gold is harder to melt or something. ROFL http://www.flickr.com/photos/jjsala/3519923421/
Well people would most likely rather have cash than broken gold jewelry, but dolnt want to sell intact jewelry
Did you read the comments under the image? They are all raving about the photography skills of the person who took the image just because it is black and white. What is so hard about taking a picture? All you do is point the camera at something and push a button.
I did not read the comment. I just found the image via google as I wanted to show a sample of the type of sign I was talking about. I see these type of "We buy broken gold" signs at pawn shops and put out by the people that just come to a town for the day to buy and then leave.
It's more about having an eye to identify something that could be seen as artistic and capturing it in a proper light and using the right exposure to get the best look out of it. There's a lot more to photography than you could ever imagine. Have a little respect for others and don't diss their hobbies. It's like me saying "They are all raving about the coin picking skills of the person who bought the coin just because it is some old coin. What is so hard about buying an old coin ? All you do is find one you like and hand someone some money."
There is some technical skill involved in taking a picture like this, but I'll agree that's not too impressive. What is interesting with photographs like this is the composition. The real skill is in taking a wall like this and seeing, where others don't, how a shot could be framed to make a normally innocuous sign stand out. The art is in seeing this sign and thinking, "Huh - that's a bit (funny/ironic/eeire/etc.)" Good - I can still BS! Appliancejunk - we get a radio ad around me for an art co-op/jewelry store that makes all their designs in "recycled gold." Ya right, people must be throwing that yellow metal out all the time. It's killing the environment!
I stand by my comment, all you do is push a button, anyone can do it. And there is nothing hard about buying coins, all you do is pay the guy, I agree with you.
I call it "Portion of Lawn the day after a Hurricane" I pushed the button and like magic an image was saved. Sorry I don't have program to make it black and white.
I hope I'm not really offending anybody, just having a little fun. My old roommate is a photographer who developed his own images and I know that it is much more involved than simply pushing a button. I love giving him the "Oh wow your finger must be exhausted after pushing the button all day long" line, he comes unglued, and I laugh and laugh.
