http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=160309697296&ssPageName=STRK:MEBI:IT&ih=006 Wait, Water can do THAT to a coin? Looks to me like a botched acid job.
Depending on where that coin was subjected to water (State, Town, Counrty) it is very possible. Water treatment prior to distibution for consumption goes through all kinds of treatment such as chlorine gas NH4 gas, Copper sulfate applications all in order to rid it of microbial pests as cryospyridium and Giardia spores. The pH of the water changes drastically with each treatment and each method that is used for sanitation. The end result for distribution should be a pH range of 6.9 to 7.1 pH units. The distribution method is most always pipelines and who knows what materials some of the pipes are made of! I did a study on this for Pharmaceutical Grade Water from Town distributed Raw water intake and discoverd a wide range of cleaning routines and distribution methods including wooden pipelines from very early distribution systems. Just imagine the leaching that can occur from underground and the mineral content of the Earth in your region of the Country and yes, it could happen in fresh water! Look at some of your Faucets in your home or your washing machine...the sediment will tell the corrosive story easily!! RickieB
No, just a typical scam. Probably some kids chem class experiment. Or just an old, dented, worn, messed with coin. I've seen coins like that in normal change. And the odd thing is there are two bids on that thing.
Quote of the Day : "PLEASE SEE PHOTOS & U-DECIDE" I've seen the photos, and I've decided. :headbang: :computer: :vanish:
Water and, Water and throwing it across a couple of continents will probably do it. Maybe leaving on I-75 for a few days might achive the same effect. Ben
I agree with RickieB. It could have started as water damage, but I also think that corrosion has been removed. The photos are just a little fuzzy that could hide any cleaning marks. There is no return/refund policy. Jim
I contacted the seller on this coin and I stated: "Hello, I am part of an online coin forum. We have discussed your coin, and there has been some degree of questioning of the authenticity of this piece. I was wondering if your coin is guaranteed genuine. Also there is considerable doubt as to if water could cause the change of surface that is seen on your coin. Thank you." I received the following reply: "hi i am sure the coin is real. i no it was water, and it's real. bye." Draw your own conclusions about this. ~Lafayette
It's a problem coin real or fake I'd wait on a better one , If the guy is selling a fake he's not going to tell you , there's just too many fakes coming out of China to trust a guestionable coin on Ebay , Trade dollars , Draped Bust dollars are worst but they're counterfitting everything . rzage
Dear Layfayette, The coin looks beat down, like a car ran over it. I think your gonna be disappointed if you buy it, trust me. I have bought many coins that looked pretty good and in hand had all sorts of stuff that was hidden by the photo. Of late I am not buying much and only graded stuff if I do, but that coin looks pretty bad even with a terrible photo so it's gonna look a lot worse in your hand. Just MHO
