Wow. I was so shocked that I had to stop and write about it. 2005 $50 One ounce gold American Eagles. Single price $899.95 and the bargain roll of 20 coins for $17,999.95 As you can see, you don't save a single dollar when buying the roll. Of course the pitch about having the coins in the original roll in the government packaging is worth the premium. So a quick check through the dealer network brings this: Gold Eagle $50 One Ounce selling price this morning $454.00 A full roll $9080.00 And that is without the couple of dollars off for buying 20 at a time. TV PRICE: Single $899.95 Roll: $17,999.95 Dealers : Single $454.00 Roll: $9,080.00 Difference Single $445.95 Roll $8919.95 Anyone still believe in good TV prices?
Ah, but where else can you buy these and be reasonably sure the pesky MS-69's and 70's have been removed. There's something to be said for a well matched roll even if you buy it one at a time. Good prices on the TV shows is somewhat unusual and one is wise to shop elsewhere before putting money into their products. One of the TV shows usually sells this sort of coin on a much smaller mark-up, but all of them charge more than the typical dealer. It seems improbable they sell to anyone for a long time sice people do get educated.
... and why such a big difference for the exact same stuff on two different tv shows? I see the same stuff on the two-suits-three-payment-show and the casual-dress-make-me-an-offer-show, but the latter is usually 20-40% lower. Has everything been searched through ten times instead of nine? Then again, I even see big differences in the same slabbed coins by the same grading service, mint and proof sets, new silver coins. Is it the clothes? I'll admit, I've bought twice from each place... and the packaging is the same.
You will rarely find coins being sold by one dealer for the same price as another dealer. They may be close - but seldom the same. And if you look at the extremes - 1 dealer may be asking as much as double for the same coin. This is not unusual. And on TV - all the rules go out the window.
Look at it as PSA (Publie Service Announcement) their just trying to help out the coin collectting community
