The Most amazing error. I have found what I think is something really rare.

I have a Washington Dollar Coin

It has Washington on the front. (Thats right I think)
It has Statue of Liberty on Back ( Thats right too!)

The edge has lettering on it. Says U Pluribus Unum and it DOES have a date 2007 P and In God we Trust.

Everything is where its supposed to be.....

( This of course it to be taken tongue in cheek ) I am getting tired of the dollars already. Soooooooo many scams on ebay its almost a joke.

I can't help but think this is directed at my 10am post today... with the structure and detail.

The coin and all the attention it is getting is bringing folks into the hobby.. they'll fade out with that warm welcome.. or is that the intention? I have been nothing but excited about finding that discrepency up until this moment...

tongue in cheek or not, no one likes to be made fun of on a public forum.

Better get used to it. There will always be more critics than supporters.

I don't think it was directed at you man! I think he was only making a joke. To be funny. But hey, that is your opinion, and I won't argue your opinion. Like I said, it does geting tiring, but I also said it is interesting. I hope I was putting anyone down. And I hope you don't take it as that. I don't think Jim was putting anyone down either. But, that is my opinion. Take care man.

    :)

I have a roll of what I think is from a fresh die set with some 68's.. so far according to ANACS there has been 1 ms 68 graded... or was that 69. anyway.. there are 4 in my set with no coin-hit marks... Good thing Wolf isn't bored in the Situation room or some mint officials would probably be fired insted of Gonzoles in the hot seat.

Just as a further intro, I'm focusing on the Presidentials because I like errors..but I mostly have foreign low-buck cirrculated stuff otherwise, and newer eagles/bullion.

Sure, I'll practice my new photo technique. I don't really know from grading 100% but in this roll I could see all the detail on the bottom ball of the torch unlike all other rolls I looked at (11) and the edges of the raised lettering was pretty sharp. That coating they put on the coin takes away from any chance at a real shine I think. I sent the best no-scratch ones away (grading/encapsulation) but I have the 5th best one still here. I'll post it.

One person's discourtesy does not justify another's at CoinTalk.

If one poster respectfully disagrees with another, that's what CoinTalk is all about.

If one poster disrespects another, the "victim" (or anyone else offended by it) should click on the [IMG] icon at the upper right of the offending post and report it to the Moderators. They will take appropriate action; but the "victim" absolutely must not respond in kind!

    Policy understood.

PS, How much time do I get to type a post? I just laid a doozey out and was greeted by a login page. I'll re-do with the short version..

It reminds me of one post in which someone stated that they opened up 4 rolls and didn't find anything (almost expecting to find errors). My comment was that if the errors were that common, then the non-error ones would become the errors.

Camera not cooperating, and after looking at my best coin, (I listed every single flaw.. a dozen of them a second ago but lost the post in time-out) I'll drop back to a hope for 2 of my 4 that I sent off are ms-66. The surface coating, I think I read that they apply some anti-corrosion stuff onto the coin? anyway it messes the shine up, under a scope especially. The shiney surface is also not very uniform in thickness across the coin, on 90% of the ones I looked at long and hard (quantity about 50) . They look like they went through a buget electroplating process where the solution was stagnent and the coin was removed too early. pores in one side of the coin and thick surface on the other side. When it's right, and the die is fresh, the detail on the bottom of the torch is nice... but the coating fades out across the coin and theres always some pores on the thinly coated part. I wish I could see the whole process it seems like an engineering challenge at the speed they need.

They also have to be upset at the fact that these are way easier to counterfeit now.. the criminals can just make SMOOTHIES. no need to take the time to do the edge lettering.. easier than faking a quarter because thre isn't even a serrated edge to have to make.

and speaking of the ebay scams..

Then theres the ol grinding wheel trick. I weighed the (smooth) ones I bought. 123.4 graines.

Then theres tapping one edge against another edge to create the "dropped letters". pays for the new hammer 10x if the altered (ahem, defaced!) coin is put on e-pay. I wrote about this in a separate answer to another's question. I DID find naturally occuring shadow letters on one coin, I think this happens inside the 140,000 ballistic bags during transport... If anyone finds a "dropped letter" that cannot be explained as a BACKWARD IMAGE (remember, upside-down D mirrored looks like a D, and a W, T, O, M, ... are indistinguishable from their mirror..

Hope this is entertaining.. Friday night and I'm scoping coins.. and ok with that! :)

... and you know what Jim, now that I look harder.. if we change the "U PLURIBUS UNUM" in your post to "E PLURIBUS UNUM" it doesn't sound like you were mocking my post.. I think I just read it defensively.. nevermind ;P

    Extra hair Curl

Rather than making new threads and upsetting the regulars, I'll keep this going in here..

Here is an oddity, not anything new, but I grabbed a few.. the Liberty "extra curl". It's a lump of metal left uncompressed when a part of the die breaks. The sharp edge that is normally there may be the first or second thing to break generally.. The inside of one of the letter "S"'s is another.

The fun I had when I received mine was, I found other cues on all 3 that matched each other. This makes the "variety" if you can call it that yet.. able to be identified positively. If this happened only during one die set (doubtful), then the extra visual cues make positive ID easier.

One of the extra marks that exist on all 3 is a small DOT just below the G on the front of the coin. See the pictures..

    So I have

    smooth edge
    smooth edge with filled-S
    shifted rim letters
    extra curl
