I had an auctioneer decline to have me put this Morgan 1891-P at auction because he was unsure what it would be worth. On Coin book: MS 60 value was $91 MS 65 value was $9,143 so not sure where in the middle would put the value. Any thoughts?
Welcome to CT. My opinion is that with the rim damage on both sides and the gouges by UNUM, it would not straight grade, although they are more lenient on some dates than others. But please wait for others to join in.
Respectfully, the pics are not good enough to grade from. But I think MS 63 is pretty much best case scenario, which lists for approx. $250. The obverse could have suffered a cleaning, another detriment. JMHO
Coin photos are a bit tricky. But we need to be able to read the luster - how the coin reflects light. Maybe you could try under a desk lamp with an incandescent bulb?
Ok. Tried with my desk lamp. Perhaps this shows more reflection. I don't think the back of the coin was cleaned. I've had this coin in my collection for 46 years.
Send it in for grading, take the guess work out of it if nobody can figure out how it grades. MS 60 value was $91 MS 65 value was $9,143 there's quite a difference there, I'm sure you'd want the MS65 value and not the MS60 value right? only way is if you sent it for grading and it actually comes back as MS65. Personally I agree with Longshot, I think its AU. the reverse being better than the obverse. too much flat in the hair above the ear for MS, I think.
Welcome to the forum! The photos make it appear to be about an AU-58 It could go as high as MS-63 but better photos would be needed to confirm. No chance for a higher grade than MS-63.
Take to a local coin shop but I think you’re looking at a lower value. You might get a better price from the coin shop after you consider auction fees. Welcome to CT.
