I just sent this back to the U.S.Mint for a replacement..... was it a strike-through, and if it was, did I just screw up for sending it back ? (It was the Half Dollar coin out of the 3 coin proof set) Thanks, Laura :desk:
Looks like a piece of wire(?) fell on the planchet and left its mark during striking. There may only be one coin like it. At most only a few. A novelty, but I don't think it has a premium. In fact, I think it would be worth less. IMO you did the correct thing sending it back.
p.s. I would have sent it back too. These types of strikethroughs/scratches would detract from the value of the coin.
Laura, it does look like a strike through of a piece of dust or lint. I have a silver eagle with a much bigger strike through than that on it that was caused by what looks like a wadded up thread. Mine's probably 3/16-1/4 inch across. I sent it in to NGC to have it labeled as a strike through (after one of NGC's people at a show told me that it could be labeled as such). They sent it back to me with a note on it stating that it is a strike through, but it is too small of an error to mention on the holder, so no, you probably wouldn't have been able to get any premium out of it.
Hi Laura, I am fairly certain that that is a strikethrough, with lint being the culprit. They are actually somewhat common on proof coins, and do not bring a premium. Strikethroughs that are major and take up a larger percentage of the coin however do often command premiums.
Thanks again everyone ...I am relieved that I didn't make an ignorant mistake by sending it back to the mint for replacement. Thanks again for all your input, LAura
