Was This A Good Deal?

    Hi, folks -

I just wanted to run this by and see what your thoughts are. I bought on eBay tonight a set of red bu Lincolns 1940-1958 plus a 1935, 37, and 39 in the same lot for $64.99 - which includes the price of shipping and a Whitman folder. The seller has a good, long reputation.

It was a Buy It Now offer and, when deducting the cost of the shipping and folder, probably spent around $57 for the coins. At about $1 a piece I feel like the price was good (especially for some of the earlier mintmarked issues), but I am not sure.....

So, for about $57 was this a good deal? I am working on a long-term project to complete a Lincoln cent Dansco album and really do not want my Lincolns after the mid-to-late 1930s to be in circulated grades for this project. Just a personal standard....

Should I have put the same $60-ish dollars into buying two or three semi-keys in problem-free Good to Fine (my minimum grade standard for pre-1934 Lincoln cents in the book? The money is spent now, but I had only two hours left in the auction and don't see 1941-1958 lots in true BU on eBay as often as I'd like to see....

    Thanks for your input.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays :smile

There is no way to really answer that without see each coin - both sides. Just guessing, but that is probably something even you have not managed yet. I they are really full red and original, you probably did alright. However, a lot of those old sets are full of cleaned coins.

Without pics. (Considering the number of coins) I would say it depends. I have been collecting Lincolns since I was a kid and anything before 35 in MS RD, RB condition with Cert. is going to cost you. Anything after 35 is going to be more inexspensive regardless of the condition. With that said, if you bought that set raw you could have scored with MS coins for a below market price. My advice, beware of dipped and Cyanided Lincolns when buying raw even with post WWII Wheats. My saying for anything that seems to good to be true is; "Don't fall for the banana in the tail pipe". I'm far from an expert which is why I suggest you PM PennyLady, she'll be much more of a definative help.

Thanks to you both for the advice. I'll have to wait and see. So far the customer comments for this seller's prior-sold "red" cents are very positive and exude satisfaction.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that Santa Claus helped me luck out on this one and I actually got a good deal :)
