What do you all think? Is there (market) value added in the new holder? It started as an NGC MS 64 Star and became a PCGS MS 64. Would you have sent it in to PCGS? https://www.pcgs.com/cert/39810152
if you now take the PCGS slab and send it for CAC consideration. not much difference in the price, but hey, if you get the green bean or the gold bean on it, 64 or 64* there's still like 20,000 MS65 and 3000 66s. the obverse toning is interesting.
You can't change what you did. I would have left as is and always check the number of coins graded first.
See we can agree on things. I may not agree with the market in some cases but realize how it operates when it comes to higher end toners.
When you're talking about a generic non-descript 85-O widget in 64, the PCGS coin would probably sell for more. However, the premium that comes with this coin is based on the toning. I'd like to think that the sort of people who would pay moon money for this coin wouldn't care as much about the plastic - and may actually prefer the NGC Star. It's probably a toss-up, in the long run. But I gotta say, that's one of the sweetest textile toners I've ever seen. If I were pursuing things like that, I'd PM you a message offering all the $$$$$$, no matter what holder it was in.
I'm not entirely sure what the number of coins graded has to do with anything here. NGC has graded over 97,000 1885-O Morgans in 64, with over 35,000 higher. In 64, a generic 85O would be lucky to get $75. As opposed to this coin, where I'd *start* bidding at $400 with the potential to go much higher. The numbers certified are totally irrelevant to the coin in question. To be fair, to a certain extent, the grade on this coin is also irrelevant.
I wanted to see how the poll goes but I know it will be skewed as plenty of people replying don't follow the Morgan toner market. From what I've experienced, high end toners in PCGS holders tend to bring more on average than comparable coins in NGC star holders. I've seen a fair share of people who have discounted or even completely passed on some coins just because they weren't in PCGS holders. I don't agree with it but for some reason it can be like that (probably a combo of PCGS and various dealers marketing working its magic over the years).
See, that seems crazy to me. I personally would rather have the Star. To me, it means I have a special coin rather than any old 64. But hey, if that means I can scoop up stars at a discount, sign me up.
I think it was worth the attempt, meaning PCGS has shown their willingness in the past few years to reward the numerical grade because of incredible toning. So trying to get it in an MS65 holder is perfectly reasonable. That said, I don't think the result will get you much. There are people like me who like the contrast between toned silver surfaces and the white NGC plastic as well as the star designation, so I don't think it will sell for more simply because it is in a PCGS MS64 holder.
It's crazy to me too but that's my experience. I've picked up a few coins over the years that I'm almost certain would have been out of my range (or at least cost me quite a bit more) had they been in PCGS holders instead of NGC.
Yes part of the attempt was to get an upgrade to 64+ (or even 65), but I figured I'd still be at least breaking even with the same 64 grade. Another thing that seems to bump the value is the TruView image. I'm not the biggest fan in general (while some are great photos, many appear better than the in-hand look). However, a recent experience made me reconsider the value of a TruView. I had a nice toner already in a PCGS holder with what I figured was a representative photo and video of the coin. It drew interest and sold but quite a few people passed on it. The buyer sent it back to PCGS for a TruView and was able to get a commitment for several hundred more for it from someone who passed on it when I was selling but now liked it more due to the TruView. I've seen other examples (and posts on the PCGS forums) where people also made a decision to buy based on a TruView being available.
I guess I do not know the toned Morgan market for the two major services. Is PCGS stricter on toned coins, bodybagging more than NGC? I simply do not know if there is a PCGS premium for these.
They aren't stricter from what I have seen for common date toned Morgans (it's about equal if not leaning towards NGC being stricter). The PCGS premium that I have seen for toned Morgans tends to be based more on perception and the amount of promotion built up over many years by dealers and certain collectors.
I would rather have the NGC star for color. Understood that the 65 would have been nice. I have owned both, and when I sold high end toners, my experience was that the really nice toners sold themselves by virtue of the toning. Know which combination I loved, personally? An NGC with a +* grade, and a CAC green bean. Then again, I have sold lots of PCGS toners for big profits.
Lol For sure. The majority of my positions are based off the market and kudos for doing what’s best for that
