Some time ago, I thought it would be neat to have a short set of dimes from 1939-1945. My original aim was to have the set in MS66 FB-- then I found out about the 45-P and the overdates, so concessions were made. anyway, I found it rather easy to accumulate these on internet auctions, but when I was done I realized that I basically had a nice set of plain vanilla white, slabbed coins. Not that there is anything wrong with high grade, booming-luster all white dimes, but I felt that mine lacked character. So I started looking around for coins with some color to them, not necessarily the highest grade pieces, but they had to "speak" to me. I think it's good for collectors to know what's 'out there' beyond ebay and the online auction houses-- lots of good stuff if you poke around and ask for help. Anyway, blah blah blah let's see some coins-- post your Mercs from the above date range that you really think are special-- blast white coins are fine with me if that's what you love-- but let's see 'em... I'll start:

Hmmm... just sold my "pink dime" today... it was a Merc that was "Breast-Cancer-Awareness Pink." Don't know if it toned funny or got painted with a marker or something else weird years ago. I might have taken a photo of it... I'll dig around.

That's one heck of a good lookin' '44 s. That's got to be at least a '66, right? And that luster looks "boomin' " to me......:)

thanks, it's in an OGH graded 66-FB. I like that subtle color, but I have a couple that aren't so subtle.

Great looking dime, Johnny! you don't see too many with that full sunrise/sunset look. Would love to have it in my set!

    Nice coins.
But as an "old guy" I'm still stuck on "blast white".
I think my attitude goes along with collecting only business strikes.
I want "workhorse" coins looking just as they came from the Mint.
But there are sure some "purty" rainbows out there.

Kanga, you have excellent taste in coins, and I can certainly appreciate where you are coming from. I think of it as enjoying jazz or blues as well as Bach or Beethoven, numismatically speaking.

    here's another one, a 45-S (micro-s) in 65 fb:

(the photo doesn't show it too well, because the light is coming in from the sides, but the bands are indeed fully separated)
