I ran into a set of 15 War Year Mercs yesterday. A guy I deal with on occasion has them. They are in an older cardboard holder. They are in almost uncirculated condition. The backs still have the high feature around the torch handle. He wants $145 for the set. I've done some research on ebay but have not found the exact set to get a feel for price. What do all of you think? I've bought most of my coins at melt or just above. This would be my first foray into the numismatic side of coins.
I'd say if they're all graded at close to an uncirculated grade, you're paying about $10 per coin which I think is a good deal. It really just all depends on their grades though as if they're not in uncirculated condition, most of these can be fetched at or under $10 in most cases.
that's a so-so price. i would keep looking around. you could find those coins 1-2 at a time and do a little better putting your own set together. also look for a plastic holder. long term a cardboard one is not good for the coins. those coins do make a nice sub-set in nice shape.
I'm in agreement and thinks it's a tad on the high side. VF-AU common dates can go for $3-$7 on average. I think the prospect of pitching it as a "WW2" set means the seller believes he can ask more of a premium for it. Smart if sold to regular armchair collectors, but for the far more experienced crowds, it's easy to see the ruse.
