I didn't want to hijack Kanga's thread. Perhaps I should start an NGC registry set. This would be my first entry:

That defect behind Jefferson's head isn't a scratch. It's a change in the toning.

    NGC MS-67* 5FS.

I think you should definitely start an NGC war nickel registry set. The 1943-D MS67* 5FS is worth 198 points and is a great start for a registry set. Your coin is super pretty and makes me jealous. Here is my 1943-D MS67*5FS.

BTW, that single coin would put you in 78th place out of 146 registered sets.

    78th place with 1 coin? That's hilarious.

Well to be fair, it is harder than most think to gain points in this particular set. If your coin is not an MS67, you might as well not include it. A full set (not including the 1943/2-P) in MS66 would gain you only 133 points. You need to have MS67's; stars and FS designations really bring in the points. A full set (not including the 1943/2-P) in MS67 would gain you 1794 points and a 5 way tie for 25th place.

Besides that, we are all competing for 2nd place as first place is completely out of reach for anyone. Bressler's set consists of 6 MS68's and the other 6 are either MS67* or MS67 5FS including the 1943/2-P. His set is almost double in points of the current 2nd place set.

    I guess I'm a total cheapskate. I paid $85.

What can I say? I've got an eye for a bargain.

I know I could never touch first place in the registry. I've never even SEEN a single MS-68 Jefferson (pre-1964) in person, from a reputable TPG, let alone could afford one.

I might go for it if I hit the Powerball lottery.

WOW, that is an incredible bargain. Did you buy it raw and then submit it to NGC?

No, I bought it already NGC-slabbed. It was an eBay buy I made. Had a terrible picture, so the purchase was not without some degree of risk.

Well that explains it. On E-Bay, you can't expect to sell a rainbow toned coin for a premium without a good photo. As far as the risk, I think you were pretty safe. You might not have known what you were getting, but you were almost certain to get a beautiful coin. NGC is very stingy with the star designation. Other than some of the low end Battle Creeks, I have never seen a star designation coin that didn't deserve it and wasn't beautiful.
