Ok so I think this is my first ever post in the error section. I can normally debunk my own stuff. However on this war nickel that I won in an awesome @lordmarcovan contest I'm seeing something that is maybe a delamination of some kind? Have a look and let me know what you think, I tried to take pics at numerous angles to show that it's raised and has a crack which has accumulated some crud.
Cool! Never had one before so kinda fun to have one in my collection. Thanks for the verification, I was doubting myself. lol
I'm an idiot, after you said that I was like wait did he mention it in the contest? Sure enough, he listed it as "with minor laminations". HAHA, oh well at least I got to share with you all.
Pardon my ignorance on the subject, would a "delamination" mean that it was not retained or is that not even a word we use in the wonderful world of numismatics?
No it would the lamination is missing. Gone. Vanished. Like this example from my collection. Even they use the definition Delaminated. This is what it is.
Hope this helps you understand it clearer. Retained lamination: Partial retained as about half is missing: Delaminating as the piece is missing.
I was able to take some proper pictures today as I do with everything I add to my collection that's worthy enough to at least go in a 2x2. After photographing and inspecting a bit more I believe there's more laminations on the obverse although very small. In front of Jefferson's nose for sure. There appears to be one coming off the bottom of the T in liberty, I thought it was a die crack at first but it only looks raised from 1 side (the lower side looking towards the top of the coin). Lastly I can't get a good look at the G in God, but that may be another spot as well. Pretty neat for me as I've never had anything like this before. I know it wasn't uncommon with these war nickels. I'm also not sure what the green/yellow discoloration is either, it's not PVC residue. I gave the coin a good long acetone soak and even rolled a cotton swap over it to no avail. Probably just some 50 year old snot that stained it. LOL Anyway thought I'd share - my photos are getting more consistent as well i think, lighting makes all the difference.
You can never know when you’ll find or receive something neat. @lordmarcovan is on our side. Sharing foxhole kinda member
