Someone mentioned liking to see coins and I know a lot of dealers have benefited from some of us deciding to buy type posted by others of our number. I suspect some of you have too much free cash and need to buy more coins so I'll show a few here (specifics or categories) that I don't recall us discussing for a while. I'm away from home so do not have access to references other than online. I apologize for errors. We will not all find the same things interesting so I invite you to post coins similarly underrepresented in recent CT posts. If you have examples of these coins, feel free to show them also.

My first is a silver stater of Kroton but not the popular one with incuse reverse matching the obverse tripod that we associate with the city. We still have the tripod but now we have an eagle sitting on a deer head. Note the city name is still spelled with the qoppa instead of the later kappa. These are struck in good silver which makes them wear more quickly than we might like but I liked this enough to buy it as one of my first Greek silvers.

Another well worn Italian is this stater of Velia. Many of these have Athena and a lion but I like the ones that show the lion working on lunch. You will be able to find a nicer one of these.

It is a bit unusual to find Roman Provincials honoring deceased rulers. The city of Odessus issued this Greek language coin of Septimius Severus reading DIVO SEVERO PIO (in Greek). This is not a common coin but I have seen others online.

The Caracalla of Anchialus represents coins honoring the games held in conjunction with his wedding. The basket with palm on top is their equivalent of our prize medals. Under the table is the inscription (in Greek) CEBHPI/NYMFH. There are many types of Provincials honoring the games with similar types. Some name the specific games.

I am surprised we do not have more interest here on Parthian coins. I believe part of the reason is most of the silver drachms have the same reverse of a seated archer. Bronzes are much more varied but most are small and crude or worn. My example bronze of Mithradates II is my best bronze. The silver drachm is of Phraates IV and shows the decline of style from the earlier high point of Mithradates. While the reverses are similar, drachms come from several mints and offer opportunities to collect by variety.

A Roman I believe belongs in every collection is the 200th anniversary of the battle of Actium issued by Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus using the types of the defeated Mark Antony. There are other restoration coins including a huge and rare series under Trajan but this is probably one of the more easily found.

Clodius Albinus is not a terribly rare ruler but most of his coins were issued as Caesar under Septimius Severus. The ones to seek out are those as Augustus from his mint at Lugdunum after he broke with Severus. Things did not go well so these coins are not common. My example is a severe example of a clashed reverse die. I collect such oddities but you might prefer a high grade normal strike. This reverse shows the Genius of Lugdunum and is just one of his more original types.

What coins do you have that have not been discussed here recently? What coins are on your want list that I should have on mine?

Concerning Parthian, they are scarcer than most other coins here, as well as the boring factor you mention. Yes, bronzes are more varied, but are even far more uncommon than silver.

As for wish list, I have done well recently actually. I got that silver Christopher last fall, but in January I got both a rarer Pharos Alexandrian coin, as well as a Aelia Capitolina Elagabalus hauling the Stone of Emessa in a quadriga. I also picked up a Commodus sesterius as Hercules. All of these have been on my hit list a while, so I am kind of rebuilding my hit list some now.

Doug, you post many coins I would love to own. But if I had to go with recently, I would say majority of what AncientNoob posts I get jealous of and would love to own. I find many of the Hunnic coins interesting as well as the parthian coins.

And as for what others should have, I think for someone who loves the severus period, Doug should have a aquilia severa & orbiana of some sort.

Holy smokes, Doug => you definitely have added some sweet additions (congrats)

... and yes, there are a few of them that are quite unique (very cool)

... hmmm, coins that are under-represented, eh?

    ... I may have a few unique types? (I'll check) ...

I always feel like a starving man at a banquet when i view these posts!!!

All I have just viewed on this thread are examples on my 'want list'

Although, I am most interested in purchasing some early Greek coinage, despite NOT having too much cash to spare or spend LOL

More than half of the coins on that list are types that have been on my want list for awhile now. And while examples come up for consideration often enough, I get stuck when I consider that they're not quite high enough on the want list. Not being one of those struggling with problem of too much free cash, I always feel I have to keep the powder dry for coins that are higher up on the want list, or are rarer and thus harder to come by. Examples of the latter are some of those that Steve cruelly chose to show :arghh:.

Having said that, I shan't complain about being shown nice coins, and now all the coins you've posted here have been officially placed on the want list :).

It seems a few of you have acquired some Nabataean bronzes under my influence, but I'm still the odd-man-out when it comes drachms. I can't say I blame anyone for not wanting them. They aren't "nice," and they're quite rare and pricey. Last year I got one of Rabbel II and Gamilat...

    rabbelsela500.jpg

This one is on the way (seller's pic) - Aretas IV and Huldu. The little squiggly marks behind the queen's head say, "Year 1" - Aretas IV's first year of rule, 9 BC. I'm a stickler for dates on these coins. I've passed up quite a few "lovely" ones for lack of a date.

    aretas huldu 1a.jpg

I don't honestly expect anyone to put these on their want list.

Aww Mat, I had no idea. Thanks Bud.

Rather than posting some obscure coins that no one other than me should own, I would rather show some must haves that haven't received any recent love.

A huge BI tetradrachm from Elam.
    20150106_ElamTetradrachmFirstCenturyBC_opt.jpg

    A Bi-metallic ancient/Medieval coin...

I found 2 types (I am sure there are more out there)...

Axum produced coins in all metals, but are the only civilization that added some gold guiding.
    20130923_AshamaIbnAbjarArmahofAxum_opt.jpg

...and the Turko Hephthalites(Huns?)... an ancient gold plug and counter stamp is common to type. That's cool!

I looked through a dozen at the Baltimore show, but none of them had detail on the small reverse bust - they were all flatly struck. Yours is excellent. I really wanted to walk away with one of these coins, but I held out for a better example.

A few days ago, I had the opportunity to replace one of the 'Eastern' coin types I no longer possess.....Bactrian coin of Meander....

So many wonderful different examples posted here. I wouldn't be able to satisfy my 'appetite' for even a modest amount of them in several lifetimes...

I'm late to the party as usual. Just not enough hours in the day. I always thought when I retired, I would be a man of leisure. HA!

Like Mikey, there are too many examples shown here that I would like to have and a few I have no desire to collect. I suppose I'm just a simple collector, with no real collection strategy. When I look for coins anymore, I'm trying to find coins that are interesting and different. That's not to say I don't buy common coins, but my "strategy" is to find coins with differing reverses or added symbols/field marks that we seldom or never see. I'm also trying to find these at bottom of the barrel prices which makes it slightly harder. Well, OK. A lot harder.

Of some of the earlier Roman 'types' that are a bit scarce (at least in higher grades), and have been on my want list for quite a while, are the budget examples I purchased a month or so ago -----Copper AS of Drusus; and Orichalcum Dupondius of Antonia....in my on-going attempt to finish my 'portrait' collection I initiated long ago and have been distracted and derailed from following up on until this past December...They look far better in hand than file photographed.
