I have the opportunity to sort and do my first grading on a number of Walking Liberty half dollars. 1920 - 1947 Greatest Challenge is I have found a few that have the date totaly worn off 10x magnification. Other than Melt value, is there any value to these coins?
I know this is an older forum but it seemed fitting I am going through a small lot of walking halves that i got for $25. Some might grade good but they weredecent priced for 7 I suppose. My questionis on the reverseimmediately to the right of the "Half Dollar", there is a small etching. I dont have my magnifier with me at the time, but it looks like an "A" and a "W" inscribed there. Can one of the senior experts :0 here elaborate on it's significance? I will post pics of the lot soon.
I agree, the ones with no date visible aren't worth much other than melt value. SapperNurse, at $25 for seven, you're not doing bad as that's about the melt value of the coins right now. I recently wanted to buy some silver, but instead of buying Eagles or bars, I decided to buy some Walking Liberty halves. A coin dealer I like to go to has two big jars I can dig through. One of them he sold to me for $5 a piece, the other $3.50. I got several coins out of the $5 jar that I would say are worth between $6 and $8 a piece and I got a couple out of the $3.50 jar that are worth $4 or $5. I think these coins are just beautiful!
Thank you for the lesson Satootoko, I have been busy with finals week approaching for this term and I hadnt had time to research myself. I had promised I would post pictures of the 7 when I had a moment so this post and the next are of those. Sorry about the poor quality, I'm still learning the best way for lighting cropping and all to paste good pics in here. BTW--> How likely these are Ef or so? I am doing better at grading AU to MS 65 but either extreme I am still lacking a wealth of knowledge
Here are the last 3 from this set: Also, the revers of all the coins is pretty decent. The eagle breast feathers are not easily distinguishable, although some wings feathers are clear, but there are no other signs of major wear, no scratches holes or stains. All the lettering is in great shape and the rims are intact Once again thanks for the look, the input and the knowledge
