hi All, here is a nice Walking Liberty half (any advice on the grade from what you can see?) that seems to have a wierd planchet problem on the lower obv rim to the right of the date. Any ideas how to describe this? I would describe it as "split" -- you can see rough metal underneath and I don't think this is "damage" because the obv rim detail molds nicely around it, unimpaired. thanks andy
I disagree. The rim width is thinner in the damage area, probably the result of some type of impact damage. The die, under pressure, could not give the rim that irregular shape IMHO.
Looks like it was whacked in that area by something that was heavy with a flat side. The underneath of the flat side was not smooth however, resulting in the textured appearance.
Looks like it was dropped and what you see is the texture of the concrete it was dropped on. JMO........................................John
Since the rim exists in that area (albeit damaged), that indicates to me the coin was originally fully struck. I can't envision a situation where the rim would exist without metal flow extending all the way to the collar during striking. I label it a post-strike damage.
It's damage, couldn't be anything else precisely because the inner edge of the rim has been moved inwards. If the collar or die were damaged - and that's what forms the rim - then that thin line would not, could not be there.
