Hello... I am Going back to coin collecting 101. Thanks to this forum, I have learned how much more I need to learn. My particular interest at this time is the walking liberty half dollar series, SLQ and Buffalo Nickels. These are coins that fascinated me as a wee barefoot boy growing up in South Alabama. I would like to collect in these areas listed above but as advised here many times "by the book before you buy the coins." Since the closest dealer to me is a pretty good drive most of the coins I will buy will be on line from reputable dealers and auctions. Besides the BM dealer seems to be a bit on the pricey side and I think I can do better if I know what I am doing. Buying coins will be course 202 titled "The thrill of the hunt" I know it has been discussed here before but would greatly appreciate any recommendations on some good books on collecting and grading and where to get them. My primary interest is Walking liberties at this time. I would like to learn as much as I can in addition to collecting them. This way I can get what I want and know what I have. It will be a long process but I am in no hurry(have learned that here to) Thanks and happy Thanksgiving.
I asked for a book on Walkers for Christmas, and I know I'm getting it, but I won't know if its good untill Christmas
Although I collect for fun and interest, not primarily for investment, I got this book: Collecting and Investing Strategies for Walking Liberty Half Dollars by Jeff Ambio Zyrus Press For each year's issues it tells you what to look for and what to expect. For example, strike, luster, surfaces, toning, eye appeal, etc. It's the only book I have on Walkers but I thought it was very good and thorough.
