@Collecting Nut Posted a 1946 D in MS65. It got me to thinking a lot about my own Walkers, as I am assembling the "short set" in MS65 and MS66. There's a difference in prices between the 2 grades, sometimes a pretty big one. And there is a lot of subjectivity in grading, of course. I've heard people mentioning the graders mood on that particular day even being a factor. And you can definitely see how, when you've looked at hundreds of these. I have 65's that appeal more to me than my 66+. And considering the subjectivity of grading, it's not surprise really. Anyway, just thinking outloud and looking at coins. I thought it would be interesting to post some Walkers and see what you guys think the grades are. And also open the floor for discussion of grading, or the series or both. I'll post about 5. And I'll start with a 1947. Feel free to comment on all, some, or none
Those are all beautiful coins. But what separates a 65 from a 66? Generally it's a matter of who's doing the grading, what kind of mood they're in that day, how much coffee they had, whether it's before or after lunch. If their boss is leaning on them, if they need to use the bathroom. That sort of thing. The other thing that separates a 65 from a 66, at least in my experience with Morgans, is several hundred dollars. Which strikes me as faintly ridiculous, but it is what it is. Carry on
It can be hundreds with Walkers too, especially some of those S mints (When it come to later dates) And that price difference combined with the subjectivity, does indeed make it a little ridiculous. But as you said, it is what it is.
I think, in theory, a 66 should have bold swirly luster, and few to no distracting marks in the focal areas. These coins were sent out in rolls not bags so many high quality ones exist, thus tight grading standards. From static photos, we can't say much about luster so tend to lean more on marks and strike. Even so, why one coin grades 65 and another 66 can seem like... a coin toss. Preamble over, I'll guess: 47- MS66 44-D MS66 43-D MS65 42-MS65 41-D MS65
I really does seem like a coin toss. 3 of the 65's I have are dates I would have gone for 66 on. BUT, the 65's I found just appealed to me more than any of the 66's on ebay at the time. It sometimes makes me even question myself about why I'm paying more for a 66 coin.
Well, I'll go ahead and reveal them for anyone who's interested. 1947 -MS 65 1944 D -MS 66 1943 D -MS 66 1942 -MS 65 1941 D -MS66
I'm not sure anyone is. Which was kinda my point I guess it's a judgement call and really could vary from day to day. The 42 in MS65, for example. I got on ebay, and at the time I liked it more than any of the (reasonably priced) 66's I could find at the time. I guess registry sets help drive the price difference one what seem like a negligible or questionable difference in condition.
